Employee Spotlight - Bettina Borces
Employee Spotlight V5

BigTime is dedicated to making sure our customers have the best product possible, and without our team that would not be possible. In this blog series, we will be highlighting our employees and shining more light on them, both professionally and personally.

We are excited to kick off this new series by featuring Bettina Borces, who is a member of our quality assurance team. Keep on reading to learn more about this BigTimer!

How long have you worked at BigTime?

I’ve been with Projector since August 2011, and with BigTime since the acquisition last year.

What first drew you to a career in quality assurance?

My position at BigTime Projector was my first role in quality assurance. Previously I had been a developer in the Telecom Industry — I’ve been interested in development since childhood. I moved to Canada at 5 years old when my dad got a new job in Pharmaceutical Sales. While living in Canada, my mom, who had worked in an accounting role for many years, was recruited by IBM. During the interview process she performed a series of aptitude tests resulting in her being hired as a developer, and my interest in the field took root. From that point, she instilled a love of problem solving in me, and still to this day we love doing puzzles together. It’s a daily race to see who gets the daily Wordle right first.

What does your role entail?

Min Zeng and I work with the product and development teams to understand the business rules, and ensure that the application is working as designed and meet’s customers’ needs. One of our primary focuses is to find bugs/unexpected behavior before they become major issues.

What is a significant project you’re a part of and how has it impacted the organization?

I’ve been part of an ongoing project to move components of our windows-based application, Management Portal, to the web, Projector Web. The team has moved over most of the major features and I’m proud of the work we have all done. I’m also so proud of our customers, who with the help of our amazing consulting and support teams, have been willing to take on and adopt these features.

How much have you grown professionally since you joined the company?

I’ve grown immensely both professionally and personally at this company. I didn’t know anything about QA when I first started, and I feel as though our team has just become more efficient and effective with each release. I’m proud that we continue to offer an exceptional product that our customers appreciate and value. It’s a team effort and I feel lucky to be part of this team. I also didn’t know a lot of people when I first moved to Boston and BigTime Projector gave me friends who have become like family.

What is the best advice you have for someone just starting out in their career at BigTime?

Try to find a job that is both challenging and fun. It’s much easier to get up and go to work everyday when you enjoy what you do. Also dive in and don’t be afraid to ask questions. We’ve all been there!

What is something unique about BigTime that sets it apart from other companies?

BigTime has been very dedicated to giving employees a voice. I appreciate that employees are encouraged to voice concerns and ideas.

How do you motivate yourself when you’re at work?

I feel motivated by the people that I work with. We’ve formed an exceptional bond, and we always do our best for the company, our customers, and each other.

What is something you are proud of in your personal life that not many people know?

I have a husband, a 4 year-old boy, and 2 dogs. My life is very busy and very full, and we manage to have fun every day. Due to my husband’s work demands, we had just 4 days to find a house in Chicago. We were able to do that with the help of our friend and agent, and now we are discovering all of the joy that comes with maintaining a house built in the 1800s.

Tell me a little bit about your life outside of the office

We moved back to Chicago in November 2022 and since then I have been making it a point to rediscover Chicago. I recently saw a show at Second City, saw a play at Steppenwolf, attended the Lincoln Park Mayfest, and I’ve been visiting the fantastic museums whenever possible.

Can you share a hidden talent no one knows about you?

I have been told that my banana bread is quite possibly the best in the world. The top-secret recipe was handed down to me by my grandmother.

Can you share some things others don’t know about you?

I was born in Makati, Philippines. I did not learn how to speak English until I moved to Canada at the age of 5. I can still speak the native language of the Philippines, Tagalog.

We are so grateful to everything Bettina has done for BigTime, and we cannot wait to see what the next 12 years have in store for her, and for all of us in the Chicago office — we hope it includes banana bread!
