Important note: Intuit is refocusing their resources on the QuickBooks Online API. As stated on Intuit’s developer blog, they will be discontinuing support of the Intuit Sync Manager in March 2016.
What does that mean for BigTime IQ Users? BigTime has been integrating with the desktop version of QuickBooks since our first product release in 2002, and integrates seamlessly with both QuickBooks Desktop and QuickBooks Online today. We’re currently developing our own QB Desktop Sync device within BT IQ so Intuit’s discontinuation of support for Sync Manager in 2016 will have no effect on BigTime’s QuickBooks integration, regardless of which version of BigTime IQ you use.
BigTime users can avoid using any sync agent by migrating to QB Online from QB Desktop.
What is the Intuit Sync Manager and why do I need it to post to QuickBooks?
BigTime IQ Pro and Express use the Intuit Sync Manager to import information from QuickBooks (desktop version) into BigTime IQ – but what exactly is the Intuit Sync Manager and how does it work? This is a big concern for many businesses because the data being synced is typically confidential. The good news is that both Intuit and BigTime Software use a secure channel to communicate and keep your information securely and safely synced across several platforms.
Intuit developed the Sync Manager to synchronize the QuickBooks company file with other Intuit online services and with integrated apps, like BigTime IQ. Intuit requires QuickBooks users to configure the Sync Manager before connecting to any other application, including other Intuit apps. The Sync Manager comes preinstalled in your QuickBooks file, where it can be initiated and set up.
The Intuit Sync Manager displays important information like the status of your last data sync and also allows users to manage sync frequency and to manually start and stop syncs. Its main function, however, is to push your QuickBooks data from QuickBooks up into the Intuit cloud. (The “cloud” is a virtual space apportioned to a person or company for data storage.)
QuickBooks users are assigned an Intuit App Center account, which doubles as an Intuit cloud account. When you run the Sync Manager from your QuickBooks file, it pushes all of the data from that file into a virtual file in the cloud. Users then update BigTime IQ from the homepage dashboard, which pulls the QuickBooks data down from the Intuit cloud and into your BigTime IQ site. When posting information from BigTime IQ into QuickBooks, the process works similarly but in reverse. First, data is posted from BigTime IQ to the cloud and then the Sync Manager pulls that data down from the cloud and into QuickBooks.
This process is entirely safe and does not expose any sensitive data. Users’ Intuit clouds are protected with fortified servers and employ encryption technology – the same used by international banking institutions. BigTime Software shares Intuit’s commitment to privacy and security, and IQ uses the same encryption technology as Intuit does when syncing data.
In short, think of the Sync Manager as conduit that Intuit laid between QuickBooks and all other software – even other Intuit software. This is two-way conduit that passes data between QuickBooks and other applications. Most importantly, it is completely secure and protects your data as it flows through the enclosed conduit to its destination.
